I am YH Wong and I have been an investment practitioner, analyst and financial writer for over 22 years. I have joyfully put in thousands of hours studying markets and how they interact with economic conditions. My approach over the years has always been to invest globally, seeking the most favorable risk versus reward opportunities among different asset classes such as stocks, bonds, currencies and commodities using both long and short strategies.

I believe in combining traditional strategies with an alternative solution gives an investor a well-rounded approach to managing their long term portfolio. With the growing concentration of risk involved in passive index funds, with newly created artificial intelligence led investing and overall market illiquidity in times of market stress, alternatives can offset some of these risks. 

As a contrarian in investment thinking, my thought-provoking articles on investment-related topics have been published regularly in the financial media. I do not pretend to know everything or have all the answers, but provide my expertise where possible to help others become more financially aware in a world which loves to hear the big lie. I hold a bachelor degree in Business from Haworth College of Business, Western Michigan, USA where I majored in finance and investments. 

Leading Noble Hills Partners Ltd. (Principal Consultant) and ACMF Private Investment Office (CEO), I work with high networth clients as well as boutique institutions. My research and fund partners are based in key financial cities.

Based in Kuala Lumpur, I team up with local partners, Eugene Chong and Lewis Chong who run the other side of the engines. Eugene is a shrewd investor who understands that making real money is about thinking beyond the comfort zone. Eugene Chong is a Chartered Engineer by profession, registered with Engineering Council of United Kingdom (ECUK) with over 23 years of experience in the field of Technology and Engineering.

Lewis Chong is a renowned business strategy consultant and the author of TMOS Revenue Model. He focuses in helping companies to increase sales revenue, profit, and be investible systematically. With more than 20 years experience, he works with talents in diverse skill sets and industries.

What will surprise investors in 2018?

So far in 2018, those with a herd mentality have been on the winning side, everything has gone in a straight line. I have been riding on the bullish wave as well. I am looking to add positions on dips in the coming weeks. Of course, nothing will go up in a straight line forever. Generally, when people are happy and confident, something wrong happens. When the shit hits the fan

Sorry, I had never heard of the LJM Preservation & Growth Fund before this. What is the big deal about this fund? Well, it fell 80% last week. The fund says it tries to profit from the difference between realized and implied volatility. This is one example of an options fund blowing up but it is unlikely to be the only one that experienced similar problems. My partner has found another one which has lost more than 90%. Investors were wiped out.   Wall Street has gone nowhere but up since 2010. Volatility has scraped along the bottom that entire time. With volatility so low for so long these kinds of funds would have had large positions, but when volatility finally broke out on Monday, they incurred huge losses which forced them to cover quickly, selling potentially hundreds of billions of dollars in equities.   Barron’s has an interesting story on this blowing up.
